BAE Systems and Hanwha Systems Partner to Develop Multi-Sensor Satellite Network
BAE Systems and Hanwha Systems have signed a strategic agreement to co-develop a global multi-sensor satellite system. This initiative aims to enhance space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for defence and security applications worldwide.
Combining RF and SAR Technologies
The partnership brings together BAE Systems’ expertise in ultra-wide band radio frequency (RF) sensors and Hanwha Systems’ specialisation in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technologies. Together, they plan to build an integrated satellite solution capable of collecting and processing RF and SAR data in space.
The system will feature advanced edge processors onboard each satellite. These processors will apply machine learning algorithms to the collected data, enabling secure and efficient delivery of actionable intelligence in near real-time.
According to BAE Systems’ digital intelligence space director, Rachael Hoyle, this collaboration marks a major step forward in ISR technology development. “Bringing together our pedigree in space with Hanwha Systems’ expertise in SAR satellites represents an exciting opportunity to progress ISR capabilities from space for international markets,” she said.
Launching Azalea by 2025
As part of this initiative, BAE Systems is working towards launching its first low Earth orbit satellite cluster, known as Azalea, by 2025. This mission aims to enhance global understanding of space threats and hazards. It will also support the growth of space-based defence services for both domestic and international customers.
The Azalea mission and broader satellite development efforts form part of BAE Systems’ strategy to collaborate with global partners and push the boundaries of space technology.
Strategic Investment and International Cooperation
UK Industry Minister Sarah Jones welcomed the partnership, highlighting its significance in boosting innovation and job creation. “The UK and South Korea are already world leaders in the space industry, and this new partnership is exactly what we both need to create jobs, advance cutting-edge technologies and expand into new international markets,” she said.
She added that the UK government’s upcoming Industrial Strategy would outline further plans to expand the space sector and attract more investment into future technologies.
Supporting US Space Operations
In a related development, BAE Systems recently secured a $1.2 billion contract from the US Space Systems Command. Under this contract, the company will provide satellite systems to track missile threats for the US Space Force, further demonstrating its growing role in international space defence efforts.
