Bahamas Puts Brakes on SpaceX Landings After Starship Debris Scare

Bahamas Halts SpaceX Falcon 9 Landings Pending Review

The Government of Bahamas has announced a temporary suspension of all SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket landings within its territory. This decision will remain in effect until a comprehensive post-launch investigation is completed.

    Environmental Assessment Now Required

According to Latrae Rahming, the country’s Director of Communications, no new landing approvals will be granted until an environmental review is carried out and evaluated. He shared this update through a post on X. SpaceX has yet to comment publicly on the decision.

Back in February, the Bahamas had granted preliminary clearance for 19 more Falcon 9 landings in 2025. However, these approvals were all subject to final regulatory checks. The new suspension places these plans on hold for now.

    Starship Explosion Raises Concerns

This move comes in the wake of a recent mishap involving a different SpaceX spacecraft. Last month, a Starship vehicle exploded in space only minutes after its launch from Texas. The spacecraft lost control and began spinning before breaking apart. This incident led to fiery debris streaking across the skies near South Florida and the Bahamas.

While the Starship and Falcon 9 programmes are separate, the incident has triggered wider safety and environmental concerns. Authorities in the Bahamas confirmed that some of the debris entered their airspace. Fortunately, early assessments suggest it did not pose a toxic threat or major environmental risk.

    Bahamas Expresses Continued Interest

Despite the timing of the decision, officials clarified that the Starship explosion was unrelated to the Falcon 9 landing operations. The pause in landings is a precaution while the country reviews potential environmental impacts more closely.

The Bahamas has expressed continued interest in space-related partnerships but is prioritising safety and environmental protection as it moves forward.
