Shubhanshu Shukla: India’s First Astronaut to Fly to ISS on SpaceX Dragon

Shubhanshu Shukla is set to become the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. NASA announced on Thursday that the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), carrying Shukla and three other astronauts, will launch no earlier than spring 2025.

    Who is Shubhanshu Shukla?

Shubhanshu Shukla is a distinguished Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot. At 39, he is the youngest astronaut-designate selected for space travel, as reported by The Indian Express.

He was among the four astronauts chosen for the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Gaganyaan mission, India’s first human spaceflight initiative. Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shukla has been an integral part of India’s space ambitions.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s Education and Early Career

Shukla completed his schooling at City Montessori School, Lucknow. He later graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA), which trains future officers of India’s armed forces.

His journey in the IAF began in June 2006 when he was commissioned into its fighter wing. Over the years, he gained extensive flight experience, accumulating 2,000 hours across various aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.

    Path to Becoming an Astronaut

Shukla’s astronaut training started in 2018-19 when he was selected for ISRO’s space programme. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he trained in Russia at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City.

His dedication and expertise led to his promotion to Group Captain in March 2024. In February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced him as one of the astronauts preparing for the Gaganyaan mission, scheduled for launch in 2025.

Excitement for the Axiom Mission 4

In an online press conference, Shukla expressed his excitement about experiencing microgravity firsthand. He believes the Ax-4 mission will be valuable for India’s Gaganyaan project.

“I want to capture my experiences aboard the ISS through pictures and videos and share them with all ‘Bharatvaasis’ back home,” he said. “Even as an individual travelling to space, this is the journey of 1.4 billion people.”

What Will Shukla Do at the ISS?

Once the Ax-4 mission docks at the ISS, the astronauts will spend up to 14 days conducting scientific research, outreach activities, and commercial experiments. Additionally, Shukla plans to showcase yoga poses in space.

    About the Ax-4 Mission

Axiom Mission 4 is a private spaceflight organised by Axiom Space. The Ax-4 crew includes:

    • Commander Peggy Whitson (US)
    • Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla (India)
    • Mission Specialist Sławosz Uznański (Poland)
    • Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu (Hungary)

This mission will mark the first time astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary will work together aboard the ISS. It also represents India’s return to human spaceflight in collaboration with NASA and ISRO.

The Ax-4 crew will launch aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and embark on a journey that will further international cooperation in space exploration.
