Mars Rover Discovers Honeycomb-Like Fields on the Red Planet
NASA scientists have been surprised by newly released images from the Curiosity Mars rover showing vast stretches of Martian terrain covered in honeycomb-like patterns.
Although Curiosity has previously observed similar geological formations, known as polygonal fractures, the latest images reveal these features across a much larger area than ever before. The photographs, captured in June and highlighted by NASA this week, provide scientists with a broader view of the unusual landscape.
Vast Polygonal Formations Spotted
According to NASA, the polygonal shapes extend in every direction as far as the rover can observe. The formations also continue around the sides of a nearby butte, creating an extensive network of interconnected patterns across the landscape.
Scientists believe these polygonal fractures may have formed as a result of climate changes on ancient Mars, which is thought to have once contained liquid water. However, researchers are continuing to analyse the new observations to better understand how these formations developed.
The remarkable scale of the discovery has attracted significant attention from the mission team because previous sightings of similar features were far more limited.
Scientists Examine Clues to Mars’ Past
Ashwin Vasavada, project scientist for the Curiosity mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said the discovery was striking.
He explained that the vast expanse of polygonal formations “took our breath away” and added that researchers are carefully studying both the shapes and chemical composition of the features. The team hopes the collected data will provide valuable clues about the geological processes responsible for creating the formations.
By examining the terrain in greater detail, scientists aim to improve their understanding of the environmental conditions that existed on ancient Mars and how they changed over time.
Curiosity Continues Long-Term Mars Exploration
The newly observed patterns are located in a Martian valley known as Valle Grande. According to NASA, the individual polygonal fractures measure between approximately 1½ inches and 3 inches across.
Curiosity has been exploring the surface of Mars since August 2012. Throughout its mission, the rover has documented a wide range of geological features and collected evidence suggesting that the ancient Martian environment may once have been capable of supporting microbial life.
The latest discovery adds to the growing body of scientific observations gathered by the rover as it continues its exploration of the Red Planet and its geological history.
