Prada and Axiom Space Unveil Spacesuit for Artemis 3 Mission

Italian luxury brand Prada and Houston-based startup Axiom Space revealed a newly designed spacesuit on October 16. This suit will be worn during NASA’s Artemis 3 mission to the moon. Artemis 3, set for 2026, will mark the first astronaut moon landing since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission.

    Innovative Spacesuit Design

The spacesuit, known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), was showcased at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. It aims to combine both cutting-edge technology and stylish design to cope with the harsh lunar environment. Developed specifically for Artemis 3, the suit will protect astronauts from extreme temperatures, particularly in the moon’s south pole and shadowed regions, where temperatures can reach their lowest. The suit will allow astronauts to endure these conditions for at least two hours.

    Enhanced Functionality for Moon Missions

In addition to thermal protection, the AxEMU is designed for practicality. Astronauts will be able to perform spacewalks for up to eight hours. Extensive testing of the suit has already taken place, including underwater trials to mimic the lunar surface environment. With these tests nearing completion, the AxEMU is in its final stages of development.

    Luxury Brands and Space Exploration

Prada’s involvement in the design reflects a growing trend of luxury brands entering the space sector. As space exploration and tourism grow, companies like Prada and others are exploring partnerships in this emerging industry. For instance, last month, French fashion house Pierre Cardin introduced an astronaut training suit for use at the European Space Agency’s training centre in Cologne. Additionally, hotel chain Hilton is collaborating with Voyager Space to support crew accommodations for the upcoming commercial space station, Starlab.
