Shenzhou-20 Astronauts Reflect on Childhood Dreams in Space
As International Children’s Day approaches on 1 June, the crew of China’s Shenzhou-20 mission extended their heartfelt wishes to children everywhere. Speaking from the Chinese space station, astronauts Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, and Wang Jie shared personal stories of their early dreams and the journey that led them to space.
The astronauts are currently aboard China’s orbiting space station. They used the occasion to speak directly to children, offering encouragement and reminding them of the value of perseverance, learning, and ambition. Each astronaut reflected on how their membership in the Chinese Young Pioneers (CYP), a national organisation for children, shaped their path.
Childhood Inspiration Guided Space Ambitions
Chen Dong shared a memory of donning the red scarf worn by Young Pioneers. “It was then that I made a silent vow to become someone who could contribute to society,” he said. He explained that this promise guided his pursuit of a career in aerospace and ultimately led him into space.
Chen Zhongrui spoke of his fascination with the sky as a child. He recalled his excitement during the launch of Shenzhou-5, China’s first manned spacecraft. “It strengthened my determination,” he said, adding that working aboard the space station is the realisation of his childhood dream.
Wang Jie drew inspiration from the CYP anthem. “When I sang it as a child, it filled me with strength,” he said. He expressed pride in contributing to China’s space programme and encouraged today’s youth to take on the mission of continuing that progress.
Passing the Baton to a New Generation
During the broadcast, the crew displayed the flag of the Chinese Young Pioneers in the space station. Chen Dong urged children to remember the words of General Secretary Xi Jinping and to grow into capable, well-rounded citizens. “We believe you will take up the baton of history,” he said, calling on youth to honour the spirit of the pioneers.
The astronauts concluded their message with a cheerful chorus: “Happy Children’s Day to all the children!”
The Shenzhou-20 spacecraft was launched on 24 April 2025. It marks another milestone in China’s growing space exploration efforts.
