China Clones High-Yield Dairy Goats In Breeding Breakthrough

Chinese scientists have successfully cloned six super high-yield dairy goats in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, marking the country’s first successful batch cloning of elite dairy goats and a significant advance in livestock breeding technology.

The project was led by researchers from Northwest A&F University, which developed the cloned animals using advanced molecular breeding techniques. The cloned group includes four male goats and two females bred from elite Saanen donor goats.

According to the research team, the donor goats produced an average annual milk yield of more than 2,800 kilograms, far exceeding ordinary dairy goat production levels.

Elite Donor Goats Show Strong Traits

The donor goats also demonstrated higher milk fat and protein content compared with standard dairy goats.

Researchers said the animals possessed stable reproductive performance, strong adaptability to environmental conditions, and effective disease resistance. These characteristics made them suitable candidates for cloning and large-scale breeding programmes.

The scientists combined genomic selection technology with somatic cell cloning to develop the goats. Using the advanced breeding system, the team isolated high-quality somatic cells before refining every stage of the cloning process.

That process included cell line establishment, embryo reconstruction, embryo transfer, and pregnancy monitoring.

The successful batch cloning marks a major technical achievement for China’s dairy goat industry.

    Cloning Technology Could Accelerate Breeding

Researchers believe the technology could dramatically shorten breeding cycles in the livestock sector.

Traditional breeding methods generally require between eight and 10 years to establish superior goat populations. However, cloning technology can significantly reduce that timeframe while helping preserve desirable traits across generations.

The technology could also address long-standing industry challenges, including the slow reproduction of elite goats and lengthy generational intervals.

Scientists said preserving stable genetic traits remains one of the key advantages of cloning compared with conventional breeding systems.

Shaanxi Remains Centre Of Goat Milk Industry

Shaanxi Province plays a major role in China’s dairy goat sector.

The province is home to around 40% of China’s dairy goats and processes roughly 80% of the country’s goat milk products, according to the report.

Researchers expect the cloning breakthrough to strengthen the region’s position in dairy goat production and support future agricultural innovation efforts.

The project also reflects China’s growing investment in biotechnology and livestock breeding as the country seeks to improve agricultural efficiency and food production capacity.
