YouTube at 20: From Amateur Clips to AI-Powered Entertainment Giant
Two decades after its launch, YouTube has transformed from a scrappy website of low-budget videos into a global entertainment powerhouse. Today, the platform commands 2.7 billion users, including celebrities such as British pop star Dua Lipa, who share polished, professional content.
With its growing dominance, YouTube is now the most popular way Americans watch television. Industry analysts expect its revenue this year to surpass Disney’s, a company long considered the leader in media.
AI at the Core of YouTube’s Future
At its annual Made on YouTube event, the platform, owned by Alphabet’s Google, outlined its vision for the next 20 years. The focus was clear: artificial intelligence.
Executives introduced over 30 new AI-driven tools designed to reshape how creators produce content. These include features that can automatically edit clips, embed shopping links, generate videos for podcasts, and even turn speech into song.
Despite Hollywood’s concerns about AI replacing creative jobs—highlighted during a major industry strike in 2023—YouTube CEO Neal Mohan assured creators that these tools were meant to empower, not replace them.
“These are tools, and really just that,” Mohan said. “No studio, network, tech company, or AI tool will own the future of entertainment.”
Creators at the Centre of the Platform
YouTube positioned its creators as the future of media, offering them more freedom than traditional networks. Mohan described video-making as a “viable, respectable, and sustainable career path” that AI would help scale further.
The platform has already paid out over $100 billion to creators in the last four years. Some have reinvested their earnings into building full-scale production studios, making content that rivals Hollywood in quality.
YouTube stars like Dua Lipa, Mark Rober, Smosh, and Brandon B—each with at least 16 million subscribers—were featured during the event. For many viewers, these creators have replaced traditional late-night television hosts, underscoring their cultural influence.
Closing the Gap with Disney
Backed by Google’s AI expertise and financial muscle, YouTube has gained significant ground on Disney. According to Nielsen, YouTube captured 13.4% of US viewership in July, compared to Disney’s 9.4%.
While Alphabet does not disclose YouTube’s exact revenue regularly, it revealed that ads and subscriptions together generated more than $50 billion in the four quarters ending September 2024. Analysts estimate Disney’s media revenue last year was close to $60 billion, but predict YouTube will overtake it this year.
Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s vice president for creator products, noted that the company’s own staff also use AI tools to speed up development, helping triple the number of new features rolled out this year compared to 2024.
As YouTube enters its third decade, it is no longer just a video-sharing site. It is an entertainment empire reshaping television, music, and content creation—all with AI at its core.
