India Advances Human Spaceflight With Successful Parachute Qualification

India’s human spaceflight programme has reached a significant milestone after scientists completed the qualification level load test of the drogue parachute for the Gaganyaan mission. The Defence Research and Development Organisation conducted the test at its Rail Track Rocket Sled facility at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh.

The Rail Track Rocket Sled facility serves as a specialised dynamic testing centre. Engineers use it extensively for high speed aerodynamic and ballistic evaluations. Therefore, it plays a vital role in validating systems designed for demanding operational conditions.

High Load Simulation Demonstrates Safety Margin

Teams carried out the test on February 18, 2026. Scientists from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre of ISRO joined experts from the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment and several dedicated TBRL teams. Together, they ensured precise execution of the trial.

During the test, engineers simulated qualification level loads that exceed the maximum loads expected during flight. As a result, the parachute endured stresses greater than operational requirements. This process confirmed an additional design safety margin. Moreover, the outcome demonstrated the robustness of the parachute system under extreme conditions.

The drogue parachute plays a crucial role in stabilising and decelerating the crew module during descent. Therefore, its reliability remains essential for crew safety. By successfully completing this stage, the teams strengthened confidence in the overall recovery system.

    Indigenous Design And Technical Expertise

The achievement highlights India’s growing expertise in designing and manufacturing high strength ribbon parachutes. Furthermore, it underlines the nation’s capability to develop complex aerospace systems domestically. Engineers relied on advanced instrumentation and technical knowledge throughout the evaluation.

TBRL once again showcased its contribution to national space and defence programmes. Its advanced facilities enabled accurate data collection and performance analysis. Consequently, the laboratory continues to support critical missions with dependable infrastructure.

    Leadership Commends Scientific Teams

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO, ISRO and industry partners for the successful qualification. He described the test as another major step towards realising the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Additionally, he acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the milestone possible.

Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the teams. He commended their commitment and technical excellence in completing the qualification level load test.
