AI System Revolutionises Biomanufacturing with Real-Time Fermentation Monitoring

A new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered monitoring system developed by researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is now in operation at biomanufacturing facilities or ‘Smart Fermentation Labs’. The technology is transforming how fermentation processes are managed, offering real-time control and data-driven optimisation that marks a major shift in life sciences and industrial production.

This AI system is specifically designed for use in industrial fermentation—one of biomanufacturing’s core technologies. Fermentation is a time-sensitive process, with microorganism behaviour varying significantly at different stages of growth. In traditional setups, engineers monitored these complex systems around the clock to ensure product quality.

Now, AI is taking on this demanding task, offering not only 24-hour surveillance but also intelligent decision-making to optimise every stage of the production process.

From Manual Monitoring to AI Precision

Inside an AI-assisted fermentation workshop, hundreds of sensors are installed on key equipment like fermentation tanks. These sensors track a wide range of parameters in real time, including microorganism growth rates and oxygen levels.

The AI system analyses these data streams and maintains optimal fermentation conditions. This shift from manual to automated monitoring helps eliminate guesswork, ensuring consistency and reducing labour intensity.

“It serves as an ‘intelligent brain’ and can make predictions about the production process,” said Li Jinjin, director of the Artificial Intelligence and Micro Structure Laboratory (AIMS-Lab) at SJTU.

    Predictive Planning Enhances Efficiency

Beyond real-time control, the AI system offers powerful predictive capabilities. For instance, in antibiotic production—which typically follows a seven-day fermentation cycle—the AI can analyse conditions at the 20-hour mark and generate a detailed plan for the remaining 150 hours.

This predictive function means the system not only understands current conditions but also foresees changes and adapts operations accordingly. It ensures fermentation is guided by optimal strategies rather than reactive adjustments.

The result is higher productivity, more consistent quality, and a shift from experience-based decisions to data-backed strategies.

    A New Era for Biomanufacturing

The implementation of smart fermentation signifies a new era in the life sciences sector. With real-time analysis and forward-looking plans, this innovation promises to boost efficiency and reliability across the biomanufacturing industry.

As industries move from manual oversight to smart automation, technologies like SJTU’s AI monitoring system highlight how machine intelligence can support, enhance, and lead complex scientific processes.
