Starlink Seeks Approval for Satellite Network in Southwestern Switzerland

Starlink, the satellite internet service led by Elon Musk, has applied to launch operations in southwestern Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Office of Communications (BAKOM) confirmed the application on Tuesday.

Plan for 40 Antennas in Leuk Submitted

According to Swiss newspaper Le Nouvelliste, Starlink submitted its application earlier this summer. The plan includes setting up 40 satellite antennas in the municipality of Leuk. The proposal represents a significant step towards expanding Starlink’s European coverage.

A BAKOM spokesperson stated that discussions with Starlink are ongoing. However, the timeline and specifics of the potential licence have not yet been finalised.

Swiss Authorities Reviewing Satellite Licence Request

The application is currently under review, and it remains unclear when a decision will be made. Starlink’s interest in Switzerland follows its global efforts to increase internet accessibility via a low-Earth orbit satellite network.

By installing antennas in Leuk, Starlink could improve regional internet access and bolster Switzerland’s position in satellite communications. This move aligns with the firm’s mission to provide high-speed internet in underserved areas worldwide.
