Germany to Establish Joint Cyber Research Centre with Israel for Enhanced Security

Germany Plans Joint Cyber Research Centre with Israel

Germany is planning to establish a joint German-Israeli cyber research centre to enhance cooperation in intelligence and security, according to German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. During his visit to Israel, Dobrindt stated that the initiative would deepen collaboration between the two nations as they address growing security challenges.

Germany, one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, has increasingly sought to benefit from Israel’s defence expertise. As Berlin strengthens its military contributions to NATO, it sees Israel as a valuable partner in addressing perceived rising threats from Russia and China.

    Building Germany’s “Cyber Dome”

Speaking to Germany’s Bild newspaper, Dobrindt highlighted that strengthening civil defence is as crucial as boosting military capabilities. “Military defence alone is not sufficient for this turning point in security. A significant upgrade in civil defence is also essential to strengthen our overall defensive capabilities,” he said during his visit.

Dobrindt, who was appointed last month by new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, arrived in Israel on Saturday to advance discussions on security cooperation. During his visit, he outlined a five-point plan aimed at creating a “Cyber Dome” for Germany as part of its broader cyber defence strategy.

This plan reflects Germany’s commitment to modernising its security infrastructure to address cyber threats and enhance resilience against potential attacks.

Calls for an Iron Dome System in Germany

Earlier on Sunday, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soeder called for Germany to acquire 2,000 interceptor missiles to establish its own “Iron Dome” system. This would mirror Israel’s short-range missile defence technology, which has proven effective in intercepting incoming threats.

Germany’s push for enhanced cyber and missile defence comes as it looks to improve its preparedness for modern security challenges. By partnering with Israel, Germany aims to strengthen its civil and military defence capabilities while expanding technological cooperation between the two countries.

These initiatives mark a significant step in Germany’s efforts to modernise its security measures, ensuring the country is better equipped to address both traditional and emerging threats.
