Tesla Launches $70,000 Model Y in India, Focuses on Luxury EV Buyers

Tesla Launches Model Y in India at $70,000, Targets Luxury EV Buyers

Tesla has officially launched its Model Y in India, priced at approximately $70,000, making it the highest price tag for the vehicle globally. This move marks Tesla’s entry into the Indian market, where electric vehicles (EVs) represent just 4% of total car sales. Despite India being the world’s third-largest car market, Tesla faces challenges due to steep import tariffs and low EV adoption.

Tesla’s Strategy Focuses on Luxury Segment

Deliveries of the Model Y are expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. With a focus on the luxury segment, Tesla will compete primarily with German brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It will not directly rival Indian companies such as Tata Motors and Mahindra, which dominate the mass-market EV segment.

Tesla’s Model Y rear-wheel drive version will cost around 6 million rupees (about $70,000), while the long-range version will sell for 6.8 million rupees. The same model is priced significantly lower in other markets: starting from $44,990 in the US, $36,700 in China, and $53,700 in Germany.

The company also offers its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature as an optional extra at 600,000 rupees. This system promises future updates that will allow the car to operate with minimal driver input.

    Imports Continue Amid Tariff Talks

Tesla’s initial sales strategy in India involves importing vehicles, despite tariffs and taxes that can push the total cost beyond double the base price. Vehicles showcased in Mumbai were manufactured in China, as Tesla’s US factories do not currently produce right-hand drive models needed for the Indian market.

Elon Musk has previously criticised India’s high import tariffs. Discussions between Indian officials and US President Donald Trump’s administration aim to ease these tariffs under a potential trade agreement.

Meanwhile, Tesla has opened its first showroom in Mumbai, attracting significant attention. Police were present during the showroom launch to manage the media and crowds. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, attended the event, expressing hope that Tesla will eventually invest in local manufacturing and research facilities.
