    India's First Green Hydrogen Plant

In a pivotal step towards India’s sustainability and atma nirbharta goals, a 1-MW Green Hydrogen Power Plant was launched at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat on July 31. It was inaugurated by Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW). This plant is a building block in India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by PM Modi.

This 1-MW capacity plant is part of a larger 10-MW Green Hydrogen project vision. The foundation stone for the mega project was laid by the PM during his visit in Gujarat’s Bhuj on on 26 May, earlier this year.

The currently launched facility is capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. It is poised to play a crucial role in maritime decarbonisation and sustainable port operations. This plant is also India’s first Make-in-India all-electric Green Tug.

The production capacity of this plant would be 18 kg of hydrogen per hour, also making it India’s first port-based plant using indigenous electrolysers. The DPA also has ambitious goals to expand into Green Ammonia production over time, advancing India’s net zero goals.

The launch of the plant marks a significant step for India towards advanced green energy initiatives and reaffirms its commitment to decarbonising the maritime sector.

At the inauguration ceremony, Sonowal lauded the entire team of DPA, led by the Chairman, and said “appreciated the engineers of L&T for delivering this complex project with remarkable speed and precision.”

Minister of State for MoPSW, Shri Shantanu Thakur also praised the landmark achievement, stating: “This is a proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for the entire country. The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance.”
