OpenAI Microsoft Revenue Cap Shapes AI Partnership Future

OpenAI and Microsoft have agreed to cap total revenue-sharing payments at $38 billion, according to a report published by The Information on Monday. The arrangement marks a significant shift in the long-running partnership between the two companies as OpenAI expands its commercial ambitions.

The reported agreement follows a contract renegotiation completed last month. As a result, OpenAI now has greater flexibility to pursue partnerships with other technology companies, including Amazon and Google.

    Revenue-Sharing Cap Supports IPO Ambitions

The reported payment cap could strengthen OpenAI’s position with prospective investors as the company moves closer to a potential public offering. According to the report, some executives believe an IPO could happen as early as the end of this year.

Moreover, the cap may help investors better assess OpenAI’s future financial obligations. By limiting long-term revenue-sharing commitments, the company could present a clearer path to profitability and growth.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report. Meanwhile, both OpenAI and Microsoft declined to comment outside regular business hours.

    Microsoft Maintains Long-Term Financial Structure

In April, Microsoft stated that revenue-sharing payments from OpenAI would continue through 2030. However, the company added that payments would remain subject to an overall cap while keeping the previously agreed percentage structure in place.

The updated arrangement reflects the evolving nature of the alliance between the companies. Although Microsoft remains a major financial backer, OpenAI has increasingly sought broader partnerships across the technology sector.

    Microsoft’s Investment Powered OpenAI Growth

Microsoft has invested roughly $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019. That funding helped accelerate OpenAI’s emergence as a leading artificial intelligence company.

At the same time, the partnership supported growth in Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing business. OpenAI’s products and services have relied heavily on Azure infrastructure, strengthening Microsoft’s position in the competitive cloud market.

Furthermore, the relationship helped establish Microsoft as one of the earliest major technology companies to commit heavily to generative AI. The collaboration continues to shape competition across the wider artificial intelligence industry.
