Trump Administration Nears Decision to Restore Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI Model Access
The Trump administration is reportedly close to allowing Anthropic to restore access to its Fable 5 artificial intelligence model after discussions over export restrictions, according to a report by Axios.
The development follows restrictions introduced under a U.S. government export control order issued on June 12, which prompted Anthropic to suspend access to its most advanced AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5.
Fable 5 Access May Resume Soon
According to the Axios report, citing a source familiar with the matter, the administration could lift limits on Fable 5 as early as this coming week.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Anthropic and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside normal business hours.
The report also said discussions between Anthropic and U.S. officials were expected to continue over the weekend. A second source cited by Axios said the company expects to restore access to Fable 5 in the near future.
Partial Reversal of Export Restrictions
Anthropic announced on Friday that the U.S. government had authorised the release of its Claude Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model to selected “trusted” U.S. organisations. The decision partially reversed the government’s earlier order requiring the company to suspend access because of national security concerns.
A source familiar with the directive also told Reuters that the government was moving towards allowing Anthropic to release Fable 5. However, the source said no definitive timeline had yet been established.
Differences Between Mythos 5 and Fable 5
Although Mythos 5 and Fable 5 are built on the same underlying artificial intelligence model, they are intended for different types of users.
Fable 5 is designed for broad public availability, while Mythos 5 operates with certain safeguards removed, making it available only under more limited conditions.
The reported move to restore Fable 5 access would mark another step in the government’s evolving approach to regulating advanced artificial intelligence models while balancing national security considerations with broader commercial availability.
