Blue Origin’s New Glenn Explosion
A valve issue in one of Blue Origin’s seven BE-4 engines triggered the massive explosion that destroyed the company’s New Glenn rocket on its Florida launchpad in May, according to Chief Executive Dave Limp.
Limp shared the findings on Wednesday, saying the investigation had traced the problem to the main oxygen valve on a single BE-4 engine. Hardware recovered from the site and subsequent inspections confirmed the cause.
“The anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, which was later confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections,” Limp wrote on X. He added that engineers had identified a clear solution and were making minor changes to the valve. According to Limp, the updated design can be quickly fitted to existing engines.
Investigation Identifies Engine Valve Issue
The explosion occurred just days before New Glenn’s planned fourth flight. It sent shockwaves across the Cape Canaveral coastline in Florida and damaged key launchpad infrastructure, some of which typically takes years to construct.
Since the incident, Limp has led an intensive technical investigation while pushing the company to return New Glenn to flight before the end of the year. As a result, Blue Origin has focused on implementing targeted engineering changes rather than undertaking more extensive redesign work.
Furthermore, the company has decided against replacing a large rocket transporter tower that suffered damage during the explosion. Instead, it plans to alter the way payloads are integrated with the rocket during future launch preparations. Limp has previously outlined this approach as part of efforts to accelerate the vehicle’s return to service.
Impact on Vulcan and Future Missions
The BE-4 engines are also used on United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket, with each Vulcan vehicle powered by two of the Blue Origin-built engines. United Launch Alliance has said it is working with Blue Origin as the investigation continues. However, the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Meanwhile, Blue Origin continues preparations for future missions involving New Glenn. The company intends to use the rocket to launch its Blue Moon lunar lander for NASA as early as next year. The mission is expected to include a crewed test flight in Earth’s orbit involving two additional spacecraft under the Artemis lunar programme.
Pressure on the US Launch Industry
The May explosion followed a mission failure during New Glenn’s third flight, adding further pressure to Blue Origin’s launch ambitions.
At the same time, the setback has increased strain across the US space industry. Before the New Glenn explosion, United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket had already been grounded because of an issue affecting its solid rocket motors.
In addition, Amazon has committed billions of dollars in launch bookings for both New Glenn and Vulcan to deploy its low Earth orbit broadband satellite network. The company aims to establish a competitor in the satellite internet market, making the availability of both launch vehicles increasingly significant.
Blue Origin’s ability to resolve the BE-4 engine issue and return New Glenn to flight later this year will therefore be closely watched as the company works to restore confidence in its launch programme and support upcoming missions.
