BYD Narrows Down Location for Mexico EV Plant Amid Incentive Offers

BYD Narrowing Down Finalists for New Manufacturing Plant Location in Mexico

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has shortlisted three Mexican states as potential locations for its new manufacturing plant, according to the company’s Mexico director general, Jorge Vallejo. The firm is currently evaluating various incentives proposed by these states, which include fiscal benefits, land offers, and management incentives.

    Key Factors in Site Selection

Vallejo highlighted that selecting a plant location involves more than just securing space. The company is considering logistical aspects, urban infrastructure, water and gas supply, and overall development. These elements are crucial for establishing a functional automotive plant. BYD aims to finalise the plant’s location by the end of the year.

    Mexican States in the Running

Although Vallejo did not specify which states are under consideration, it was previously indicated by BYD Chief of Americas Stella Li that the plant would be centrally located in Mexico. Some likely contenders include Nuevo Leon, a northern state that is a significant automotive hub, home to Tesla’s proposed mega-factory and a new Volvo plant. The central state of Puebla, known for Volkswagen’s production, and nearby San Luis Potosi, where BMW manufactures EVs, are also potential candidates.

Despite the pressure from the US, Mexico’s federal government has refrained from offering incentives like low-cost public land or tax cuts to Chinese automakers, focusing instead on other forms of support.

    Production Capacity and Market Focus

BYD plans to produce 150,000 units in the plant’s first phase, with a second phase expanding capacity by an additional 150,000 units. Over the coming years, the plant’s output could reach between 400,000 and 500,000 units. Vallejo confirmed that the facility would primarily serve the Mexican market, with no immediate plans for entering the US market.

The specific models to be produced at the new plant have not yet been identified. BYD executives plan to meet with the team of Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum and the economy ministry to discuss their manufacturing and marketing strategy.

    Other Automotive Developments in Mexico

In related news, the French-Italian automaker Stellantis recently commenced EV production at its plant in the State of Mexico. Mexico’s Economy Minister, Raquel Buenrostro, attended the event and encouraged global companies to continue strengthening supply chains in the country.

BYD’s forthcoming plant and other ongoing investments in Mexico underline the country’s growing significance as a hub for automotive production, particularly in the rapidly expanding EV sector.
