Beijing to Integrate AI Education in Schools Under New Three-Year Plan

The Beijing Municipal Education Commission has unveiled a three-year plan to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) education into primary and secondary schools. This initiative aims to reform and enhance basic education using AI, equipping students with essential knowledge and skills from an early age.

AI Courses to Be Introduced in Schools

Starting from the upcoming fall semester, schools must allocate at least eight class hours per academic year to AI-related subjects. These courses will focus on how AI can assist students in learning, teaching, evaluation, and research.

For primary school students, AI lessons will centre on experiential learning, introducing basic AI concepts in an engaging way. Middle school students will receive more structured cognitive learning, helping them understand AI’s role in academics and daily life. High school courses will be more advanced, covering practical applications and encouraging innovation in AI technologies.

Expanding AI Learning Beyond the Classroom

The plan also promotes hands-on AI education through innovation labs, advanced research courses, and seasonal AI camps. Schools and districts are encouraged to partner with universities to develop research-oriented AI programs.

Additionally, Beijing is urging universities, research institutions, and tech companies to open their AI labs and science museums to school students. This approach will provide real-world learning experiences and practical exposure to AI technologies.

Developing a Skilled AI Teaching Workforce

To support the implementation of AI education, Beijing aims to train 100 professional AI teachers and 1,000 backbone teachers in stages. Educators from related fields will be invited to participate in these specialised training programs to build a dedicated AI education faculty.

By integrating AI education into its school system, Beijing is taking significant steps toward preparing students for the digital age. This initiative not only strengthens AI literacy but also fosters innovation and future talent in the field.
