IIT Bombay and SBI Life Launch Bharat AI & Cyber Innovation Hub for Insurance

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and SBI Life Insurance have launched the Bharat AI & Cyber Innovation Hub for Insurance, a collaborative research centre focused on developing indigenous artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies for India’s insurance sector.

The initiative aims to accelerate the development of Indian-designed, Indian-developed and Indian-owned AI and cybersecurity solutions while supporting the country’s push for technological self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission. The partnership also addresses the growing need for stronger digital security as India’s insurance industry expands.

Focus on Indigenous AI and Cybersecurity

The Bharat AI & Cyber Innovation Hub will develop homegrown technologies to address emerging cybersecurity challenges facing the insurance industry. The initiative seeks to reduce reliance on imported cybersecurity solutions while strengthening the resilience of India’s financial services ecosystem.

As insurers increasingly depend on digital platforms to deliver services and process large volumes of customer data, the need for robust cybersecurity infrastructure has become more critical.

    Research Across Emerging Technologies

The hub will undertake research in several advanced technology areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum technologies and digital insurance solutions.

In addition to research, the centre will focus on translating innovations into practical technologies that can be deployed across the insurance industry. The collaboration is also expected to promote closer engagement between academia and industry to accelerate the adoption of new technologies.

    Supporting a Growing Insurance Market

According to SBI Life Insurance, India’s insurance premium market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6.9% through 2030. As insurance penetration increases, companies will manage larger volumes of sensitive customer information, making stronger cybersecurity measures increasingly important.

The Bharat AI & Cyber Innovation Hub aims to help the sector address these evolving security requirements through locally developed technology solutions.

    Developing Industry-Ready Talent

Beyond research, the partnership will support executive education, talent development, strategic consulting, innovation incubation and collaborative research programmes.

Students and researchers will have opportunities to work on real-world industry challenges, helping build a skilled workforce equipped to meet the technological demands of India’s rapidly evolving insurance sector.

IIT Bombay said the initiative is intended to serve as a model for future collaborations between higher education institutions and regulated industries. By combining academic expertise with industry requirements, the partnership aims to accelerate innovation and strengthen India’s capabilities in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
