India Sets Up AI Governance Body to Guide National Strategy

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has established the AI Governance and Economic Group, a high-level inter-ministerial body designed to lead and coordinate India’s national approach to artificial intelligence governance.

This move formalises key institutional recommendations outlined in India’s AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey. Both documents emphasised the need for a central authority to ensure alignment across government bodies and to manage the broader economic and societal implications of AI adoption.

Coordinated Approach to AI Policy and Regulation

The newly formed group will function as the apex institution within India’s AI governance framework. Its primary objective is to promote a unified, whole-of-government strategy that brings together ministries, departments, regulators, and advisory organisations.

By creating a central coordination mechanism, the government aims to ensure that AI deployment aligns with national priorities, including economic growth, social stability, and workforce transitions. In particular, the Economic Survey highlighted the importance of addressing labour market disruptions that may arise from increased automation.

    Leadership and Institutional Structure

The AI Governance and Economic Group will be chaired by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Meanwhile, Minister of State Jitin Prasada will serve as Vice Chairperson. The group includes senior representatives from across government, covering areas such as science and technology, economic policy, and national security.

This broad representation reflects the cross-sectoral impact of artificial intelligence. As a result, the group is expected to play a central role in shaping policies that balance innovation with safeguards.

    Expert Support and Advisory Mechanism

To strengthen its decision-making, the group will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee. This committee will provide specialised input on global developments, emerging technologies, regulatory challenges, and evolving risks associated with AI.

Furthermore, the advisory body will help ensure that India’s policies remain responsive to rapid technological change. It will also contribute to the development of frameworks that encourage responsible innovation while maintaining oversight.

The establishment of the AI Governance and Economic Group marks a significant step in India’s efforts to build a structured and forward-looking AI governance ecosystem. By integrating policy coordination with expert guidance, the initiative aims to support both technological advancement and societal resilience.
