According to Anand (Jude) Kannabiran, Vice President, Asia at identity security company Delinea, organisations are witnessing an unprecedented rise in non-human identities. AI agents, bots, application programming interfaces (APIs) and autonomous workflows now require authentication, authorisation and governance, placing new demands on enterprise security teams.
AI Expands the Identity Landscape
Kannabiran said the focus has shifted considerably in recent years. Three years ago, organisations primarily concentrated on securing human identities. Today, AI agents and other non-human identities are multiplying at a pace that many enterprises struggle to monitor effectively.
As a result, the challenge extends far beyond basic authentication. Security teams must also maintain visibility across every identity, enforce governance policies and establish trust throughout an increasingly complex identity environment. Without these controls, organisations risk losing oversight of the systems and automated processes that power critical business operations.
Indian Enterprises Accelerate AI Adoption
Meanwhile, Indian enterprises are progressing beyond traditional digital transformation initiatives and moving towards large-scale operational AI deployments. Banks, telecom operators, manufacturers and digital-native businesses are integrating AI into customer service, software development and decision-making processes.
This expansion creates thousands of additional machine identities across enterprise environments. Therefore, these identities require the same level of governance and oversight that organisations have historically applied to employees. As AI-powered systems become more autonomous, ensuring that every machine identity is properly authenticated and authorised becomes increasingly important.

Kannabiran believes many organisations are not fully prepared for this shift. However, the issue is not a lack of awareness. Instead, AI adoption is advancing more quickly than security programmes can evolve.
He explained that business leaders continue to drive AI implementation because of its operational benefits. At the same time, security teams must protect these deployments without slowing innovation. Consequently, cybersecurity professionals often find themselves adapting to new AI capabilities after they have already entered production.
This growing imbalance highlights the need for stronger identity governance strategies that can keep pace with rapid technological change. As enterprises continue expanding their AI capabilities, securing both human and non-human identities will remain essential to maintaining trust, visibility and operational resilience across modern digital environments.
