OpenAI Co-Founder John Schulman Joins Rival Anthropic

    John Schulman

John Schulman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, has departed from the ChatGPT creator to join rival AI company Anthropic. Schulman announced his move on social media platform X late Monday, stating his desire to focus on AI alignment and return to hands-on technical work.

    OpenAI Leadership Shifts

Schulman’s departure is part of a series of significant changes at OpenAI. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s President and co-founder, also announced on X that he is taking a sabbatical until the end of the year. Additionally, Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year, has left the company.

    Internal Reassignments and Departures

These changes follow the reassignment of Aleksander Madry, OpenAI’s AI safety leader, to another role in July. Other notable exits include co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever in May, and founding member Andrej Karpathy in February. Karpathy has since launched an AI-integrated education platform in July.

    Legal Challenges from Elon Musk

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, has revived a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. Musk alleges that the company prioritised profits and commercial interests over the public good. He initially left OpenAI three years after its founding.

    Conclusion

The departure of key figures like John Schulman and Greg Brockman marks a significant period of transition for OpenAI. As these shifts occur, the company’s direction and focus will likely evolve, influenced by new leadership and legal challenges.
