First Components of ASML Chipmaking Tool Arrive at Albany NanoTech Complex

The first components of an ASML next-generation chipmaking tool arrived at New York state’s Albany NanoTech Complex on Tuesday (July 21), according to the governor’s office. The delivery marks a significant step in expanding advanced semiconductor research and development capabilities in the United States.

The Albany NanoTech Complex will use the cutting-edge system to support research into future chip design and manufacturing technologies. As semiconductor companies continue to push the limits of chip performance, the facility will play a key role in developing next-generation production methods.

Albany Facility Expands Advanced Semiconductor Research

The Albany NanoTech Complex is the only facility of its kind in North America, according to NY Creates Chief Executive Dave Anderson. He said the centre is comparable in scope and focus to Europe’s Imec, which operates in Belgium.

Anderson described the arrival of the new equipment as a transformative milestone for both the facility and semiconductor research in the United States.

“It really is transformative for the future of our scope of activities as well as U.S.-based R&D, and really, we’re kind of at the epicentre of that next generation of technology development,” Anderson said.

    Industry Partners Support Development

NY Creates oversees the Albany NanoTech Complex and has established partnerships with IBM, memory maker Micron and Japanese chip equipment manufacturer Tokyo Electron. These collaborations support research aimed at advancing semiconductor technology and manufacturing processes.

The addition of ASML’s latest equipment is expected to strengthen those efforts. It also reinforces the facility’s position as a major centre for innovation in chip research and development.

High NA EUV Tool to Be Operational This Year

ASML’s next-generation high numerical aperture (High NA) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machine prints circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. Each system costs roughly $400 million.

The industry considers these machines essential for producing future generations of advanced processors. As chipmakers continue shrinking the atomic-sized features that make up semiconductor devices, High NA EUV technology is expected to become increasingly important.

The components delivered on Tuesday form the base of the tool’s mainframe. Additional components will arrive over the coming weeks as assembly continues at the Albany NanoTech Complex.

Anderson said he expects the entire system to be fully operational by the end of the year. Once completed, the tool will support research into future semiconductor manufacturing techniques and help drive the next phase of chip technology development.
