    ISRO's Poem-4

PSLV-C60 SpaDeX Mission: POEM-4 Expands Horizons in Space Research

The PSLV-C60 SpaDeX mission marks a milestone for ISRO’s Polar Synchronous Launch Vehicle (PSLV) programme with the fourth deployment of the Orbital Experiment Module (POEM). This innovative platform utilises the spent fourth stage of the PSLV to conduct extended-duration in-orbit microgravity experiments, preventing it from becoming space debris. ISRO’s POEM-4 hosts 24 experimental payloads, tripling its capacity compared to the previous mission, POEM-3.

    Advanced Payloads from ISRO/DOS Centres

ISRO has contributed 14 cutting-edge payloads focusing on robotics, sensors, space science, and proof-of-concept experiments. Highlights include:

    • Walking Robotic Arm (RRM-TD): Developed by IISU, this 7-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator demonstrates inchworm-like movement for in-orbit servicing and inspection.
    • Debris Capture Robotic Manipulator: A VSSC innovation designed to capture and manipulate tethered debris, aiding future space clean-up missions.
    • Gradient Control Reaction Wheel Assembly (RWA): This IISU payload enhances attitude stabilisation of the POEM platform using advanced reaction wheels.
    • Multi-Sensor Inertial Reference System (MIRS): Tests miniaturised inertial sensors, enabling high-precision measurements for advanced missions.
    • CROPS (Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies): A VSSC-led experiment to grow cowpea seeds in microgravity, paving the way for sustainable extraterrestrial agriculture.

    Contributions from Non-Government Entities

The 10 payloads from academic institutions and start-ups offer innovations across diverse fields. Key payloads include:

    • MOI-TD (AI Lab in Space): Developed by TakeMe2Space, this payload enables real-time data processing with in-orbit machine learning models, showcasing AI applications in space.
    • APEMS: Amity University’s module studies plant callus growth in microgravity, contributing to advancements in biological research for space exploration.
    • RVSat-1: RV College of Engineering investigates gut bacterium growth kinetics, providing insights into astronaut health during long-term missions.
    • Green Propulsion Systems: Two payloads from Bellatrix Aerospace and Manastu Space demonstrate environmentally friendly thrusters using advanced propellants.
    • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Demonstrations: GalaxEye Space and Piersight Space are testing advanced SAR technologies, enhancing remote sensing capabilities.

    Expanding Research Capabilities

POEM-4 enables unprecedented research opportunities by integrating innovations in robotics, electronics, sensors, and propulsion systems. The platform fosters collaborations between ISRO, academia, and start-ups, accelerating technological advancements and their practical applications.

With the addition of 24 payloads, POEM-4 continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, supporting ISRO’s vision of achieving sustainable and innovative space missions.
