NASA Astronauts Briefly Prepare For Possible ISS Evacuation
NASA briefly instructed five astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to take shelter and prepare for a possible evacuation after concerns emerged over an air leak in the Russian segment of the orbiting laboratory. However, the agency reversed the order about two hours later and allowed the astronauts to return to normal station operations.
The precautionary measure came as a Russian crew worked to address the air leak issue. During the alert, four astronauts assigned to NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission took shelter inside the Dragon spacecraft. They were joined by NASA astronaut Chris Williams, a member of the station’s Expedition 74 team.
SpaceX Crew-12 Team Members
Jessica Meir serves as the commander of NASA’s Dragon spacecraft for the SpaceX Crew-12 mission. The American astronaut, who is from Caribou, Maine, was selected by NASA in 2013. This mission marks her second journey into space.
Jack Hathaway is the pilot of the Dragon spacecraft. The American astronaut and U.S. Navy commander is from South Windsor, Connecticut. Notably, this is his first space flight.
Sophie Adenot is a mission specialist on the Crew-12 mission. The French astronaut represents the European Space Agency and was selected as an astronaut in 2022. Before joining the astronaut corps, she earned an engineering degree in Toulouse, France. She also worked as a helicopter pilot and design engineer.
Andrey Fedyaev serves as a mission specialist for the mission. The Russian cosmonaut previously completed a long-duration stay in orbit. He spent 186 days in space as a flight engineer on Expedition 69 in 2023. Therefore, this mission represents his second extended assignment aboard the station.
Expedition 74 Crew
Chris Williams is a NASA astronaut and serves as a flight engineer on Expedition 74. During the precautionary shelter order, he joined the Crew-12 astronauts inside the Dragon spacecraft.
Sergey Kud-Sverchkov leads Expedition 74 as the mission commander. The Russian cosmonaut oversees station operations as part of the current crew rotation.
Sergei Mikaev serves as a flight engineer on Expedition 74. He works alongside the other crew members to support scientific research and station maintenance activities.
Temporary Precaution On The Space Station
The shelter order was issued as a safety precaution while efforts continued to assess and address the air leak. Although NASA initially directed the astronauts to prepare for a potential evacuation, the agency later determined that the immediate risk had eased.
As a result, the astronauts were cleared to leave the Dragon spacecraft and return to their duties aboard the International Space Station. The incident nevertheless highlighted the importance of established safety procedures and rapid response measures during operations in orbit.
