Prada Unveils Lunar Undergarment For NASA Mission In New Space Industry Push

Italian luxury fashion house Prada has revealed a specialised inner-layer garment designed for astronauts travelling to the Moon, marking another step in the company’s efforts to establish a presence in the growing space industry.

The garment, unveiled on Sunday, was developed in partnership with Houston-based space infrastructure company Axiom Space. The announcement highlights Prada’s ambition to become the first major luxury fashion brand to secure a meaningful role in space-related technology and apparel.

    Designed For Lunar Missions

The newly introduced garment is a body-hugging inner suit intended to be worn beneath astronauts’ outer spacesuits during future lunar missions.

Engineers and designers incorporated ventilation tubes directly into the knitted structure of the garment. The design aims to help regulate temperature and improve comfort for astronauts operating in the challenging conditions of space.

The project represents a blend of technical engineering and advanced textile design, an area where fashion companies increasingly see opportunities beyond traditional consumer markets.

    Building On Earlier Space Collaboration

The latest unveiling follows Prada’s high-profile entry into the space sector in 2024. At that time, the company introduced a spacesuit developed alongside Axiom Space for NASA’s Artemis programme.

That spacesuit is expected to be used during NASA’s planned Artemis 4 mission, currently targeted for a Moon landing in 2028.

By contributing both the outer spacesuit and the inner-layer garment, Prada is expanding its involvement in specialised aerospace clothing and demonstrating how luxury fashion expertise can be applied to highly technical environments.

Luxury Industry Seeks New Growth Areas

Prada’s move into space technology comes as the global luxury goods industry faces ongoing challenges.

After experiencing two years of contraction, the sector had begun showing signs of stabilisation. However, geopolitical tensions and conflict in the Middle East have disrupted international travel and weighed on luxury spending in several regions.

Against this backdrop, brands are increasingly exploring new categories and partnerships that extend beyond conventional fashion and accessories.

For Prada, participation in space-related projects offers both technological prestige and an opportunity to diversify its brand presence into emerging industries.

Fashion Brands Expand Into Space Technology

Prada is not the only apparel company pursuing opportunities connected to space exploration.

Under Armour has partnered with Virgin Galactic to develop clothing and apparel for commercial spaceflight participants. Meanwhile, Columbia Sportswear has collaborated with Intuitive Machines on advanced fabric technologies designed for space applications.

These partnerships reflect a growing intersection between aerospace engineering and apparel innovation, as companies seek to develop materials capable of performing in extreme environments.

As space exploration efforts expand and commercial missions become more frequent, collaborations between technology firms and fashion brands are expected to play an increasingly visible role in the industry.
