SpaceX Delays Falcon 9 Launch Over LOX Leak and Weather Concerns

Falcon 9 Launch Postponed Again Due to Technical Glitch and Weather Concerns

The launch of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket has been delayed once more, marking the fourth postponement of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The delay comes as SpaceX works to fix a technical issue and as weather conditions remain unstable at the launch site.

    LOX Leak Forces Another Delay

SpaceX announced on X that the launch, originally scheduled for 11 June 2025, has been stood down. The reason cited was a Liquid Oxygen (LOX) leak discovered during post-static fire booster checks.

“Standing down from tomorrow’s Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the @Space_Station to allow additional time for SpaceX teams to repair the LOx leak identified during post static fire booster inspections. Once complete – and pending Range availability – we will share a new launch date,” the company stated.

This delay adds to previous hold-ups caused by weather issues, including a 45% chance of rain and strong winds at the launch site. The combination of technical and environmental challenges has led to continued uncertainty surrounding the mission’s timeline.

Indian Air Force Officer Onboard Ax-4 Mission

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is one of the astronauts on the Ax-4 mission. His journey to space is significant, as he will become the first Indian Gaganyatri to travel to the ISS through this collaborative international effort.

This mission is also a landmark for Axiom Space, which continues to partner with SpaceX and international agencies to enable commercial space missions.

    ISRO Provides Additional Details

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also shared insights into the situation. According to a post from the ISRO chief, a seven-second hot test was carried out on the Falcon 9 booster stage at the launch pad. It was during this test that the LOX leak was detected in the propulsion bay.

ISRO further clarified, “Based on the discussion on this topic by ISRO team with the experts of Axiom and SpaceX, it has been decided to correct the leak and carry out necessary validation test before clearing for the launch.”

With the correction and subsequent testing pending, the official launch date remains undetermined.

    Awaiting New Launch Schedule

While the Ax-4 mission remains on hold, teams from SpaceX, Axiom, and ISRO continue their collaborative work to ensure mission safety and success. A new launch date will be announced once repairs are complete and range availability is confirmed.

As the world watches, the mission holds immense significance for both international cooperation in space and India’s growing presence in manned spaceflight.
