SpaceX Wins $2.29 Billion Space Force Satellite Network Contract

The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract to develop a secure satellite communications network designed to connect military sensors and weapons platforms around the world.

The fixed-price agreement covers the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone, a high-speed and resilient communications architecture intended to provide low-latency and high-capacity data transport for military operations.

SpaceX To Build Military Satellite Communications Network

According to the Space Force, the project requires SpaceX to deliver a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027. The SDN Backbone will support rapid transmission of critical battlefield data across global defence systems.

The network is expected to play a central role in integrating missile warning and tracking sensors with interceptor systems in near real time. As a result, officials view the programme as a key element of the Trump administration’s proposed Golden Dome missile defence initiative.

Space Force Colonel Ryan Frazier, acting portfolio acquisition executive for the programme, said the project combines commercial innovation with military requirements to strengthen operational capabilities for warfighters.

Low Earth Orbit Constellation To Support Defence Missions

The SDN Backbone will operate as a proliferated low Earth orbit satellite constellation. Furthermore, the system will expand an existing mesh network designed to provide worldwide communication services for the Pentagon.

The Space Force said the constellation would operate alongside the Space Development Agency’s Transport Layer. Together, the systems are intended to create a unified communications architecture capable of supporting current and future Department of Defense missions.

Officials added that the network’s low-latency capabilities are designed to improve the speed and reliability of military data sharing across multiple operational environments.

    Additional Contractors Expected This Summer

The Space Force also announced plans to identify additional contractors during the summer for satellite production and other network components linked to the SDN programme.

The broader initiative reflects growing Pentagon efforts to integrate commercial space technologies into national defence infrastructure. Moreover, the programme highlights increasing reliance on satellite-based communications and real-time data transfer for modern military operations.

SpaceX has continued to expand its role in U.S. national security space programmes through launch services, satellite development and defence-related communications systems.
