SpaceX Launches Starship Test Flight Carrying Advanced Starlink Satellites

SpaceX has successfully launched its Starship rocket on another test flight, this time carrying its most advanced Starlink satellites as the company continues to refine the world’s largest and most powerful launch system.

Towering 407 feet (124 metres), Starship lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility at the southern tip of Texas. NASA closely monitored the mission, which represents another important step towards certifying Starship as the lunar lander for future Artemis moon missions.

The launch followed a last-minute abort earlier this month after six of the first-stage booster’s 33 engines failed to ignite. Ahead of the latest attempt, SpaceX replaced the affected engines. The previous Starship flight in May also encountered engine issues that prevented the booster from completing a controlled return.

    Mission Carries Advanced Starlink Satellites

This marked the 13th test flight of Starship and the second mission this year using the upgraded Version 3 configuration. Like the previous demonstration flight, which reached an altitude of around 125 miles (200 kilometres), neither the booster nor the spacecraft was intended to be recovered.

Instead, the booster was scheduled to splash down in the Gulf of Mexico, while the stainless steel spacecraft was set to re-enter over the Indian Ocean more than 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometres) from its launch site after an hour-long mission.

Before re-entry, the newly launched Starlink satellites had their own objectives. Their independent flight was expected to last no more than 20 minutes.

After deployment from Starship’s dispenser, the satellites were designed to extend their solar arrays and antennas before attempting laser-based communications with older Starlink satellites already in orbit. With more than 10,000 Starlink satellites providing internet services, SpaceX operates the world’s largest satellite constellation.

    Heat Shield Undergoes Critical Testing

Six of the newly deployed Starlink satellites carried cameras to capture images of Starship’s heat shield during flight. In addition, the heat shield was equipped with sensors to measure the extreme pressures experienced during launch.

Most of the thermal protection tiles remained black. However, engineers deliberately painted some tiles white to simulate missing sections, allowing SpaceX to evaluate the heat shield’s resilience under demanding conditions.

The company aims to ensure the heat shield can safely withstand atmospheric re-entry before attempting to return Starship itself to the Starbase launch site near the Texas-Mexico border.

SpaceX has already demonstrated the ability to catch a returning Super Heavy booster using giant mechanical arms mounted on the launch tower. The company ultimately plans to use the same system to recover the Starship spacecraft, supporting its goal of developing a fully reusable launch vehicle.

NASA and Mars Missions Drive Development

NASA is relying on Starship to complete testing and achieve orbital capability in time for preparations ahead of the Artemis III mission. The planned crew of three Americans and one Italian astronaut is expected to practise docking their spacecraft with Starship next year.

Beyond NASA’s lunar programme, Starship remains central to Elon Musk’s long-term vision of establishing a city on Mars. The company has also announced plans for future tourist missions to both the Moon and Mars.

The latest test flight was delayed after the July 16 launch abort and again because of thick cloud cover associated with Tropical Storm Bertha before finally lifting off.
