SpaceX Scrubs Starship V3 Launch After Last-Minute Technical Issue
SpaceX postponed the launch of its 12th Starship test flight on Thursday after technical issues forced the company to halt the countdown seconds before liftoff in Texas.
The highly anticipated mission involved the upgraded Starship V3 vehicle, which includes dozens of design improvements aimed at supporting rapid Starlink satellite deployments and future NASA lunar missions.
SpaceX confirmed that it will attempt the launch again on Friday, May 22, if technical repairs are completed in time.
Countdown Halted Seconds Before Liftoff
The launch countdown experienced multiple pauses before the final scrub due to concerns involving fuel temperature and pressure readings.
Later, SpaceX founder Elon Musk explained that a hydraulic pin connected to one of the launch tower’s giant mechanical arms failed to retract correctly during the final stages of preparation.
Musk stated on X that the company could proceed with another launch attempt the following day if engineers managed to resolve the issue overnight.
The delay marked another setback for the Starship programme following months of redesign work and testing adjustments.
Starship V3 Seen As Critical Upgrade
The Starship V3 configuration represents SpaceX’s latest effort to improve the reliability and performance of its fully reusable launch system.
According to the company, the updated design incorporates numerous modifications following a series of Starship test failures during the previous year.
SpaceX has invested more than $15 billion into Starship development as the company seeks to dramatically reduce launch costs while expanding its space transportation capabilities.
The spacecraft remains central to several of Musk’s long-term ambitions, including rapid Starlink deployment, deep-space exploration, orbital infrastructure, and future Mars missions.
In addition, Starship is expected to play a major role in NASA’s Artemis lunar programme, which plans to use a modified version of the spacecraft for crewed Moon landings.
Investors Closely Watching Programme Progress
The latest Starship test also carries broader financial significance for SpaceX.
Industry observers believe Starship’s development progress could influence investor sentiment ahead of a potential future SpaceX initial public offering, which some analysts speculate could become one of the largest IPOs in history.
Before the launch attempt, Musk sought to lower expectations regarding possible setbacks, noting that the company already has a large production pipeline of V3 ships and boosters under construction.
He also stated that even a failed launch would likely delay future Starship testing by only about a month.
Nicki Minaj Appears During Broadcast
Ahead of the planned launch, musician Nicki Minaj briefly appeared during SpaceX’s livestream broadcast.
During the appearance, she gave what she described as a “major shout out” to Elon Musk and thanked him for his work advancing humanity.
The launch delay nevertheless shifted attention back to the technical challenges SpaceX continues to face as it pushes forward with the world’s most ambitious reusable rocket programme.
