Smartphone And Laptop Prices Rise As AI Boom Strains Memory Supply
Consumers in India are facing rising prices for smartphones, laptops and other electronics as growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure tightens the global supply of memory chips.
Technology companies are increasingly prioritising AI data centres, forcing manufacturers to divert critical components such as RAM and memory chips away from consumer devices. As a result, products including smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles, storage devices and televisions are becoming more expensive.
AI Demand Pushes Up Memory Costs
The rapid expansion of AI services such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini has sharply increased demand for high-performance memory components.
As companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure, memory chip manufacturers are allocating more supply towards data centres rather than consumer electronics.
Industry experts warn that shortages may continue through 2028, with prices expected to rise further during the second half of this year.
Major memory producers including Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are focusing increasingly on higher-margin AI-related contracts. This shift has reduced the supply available for smartphones, laptops and other mainstream devices.
Why RAM Matters For Consumer Devices
Random Access Memory, commonly known as RAM, plays a crucial role in the performance of smartphones and computers.
RAM allows processors to access information quickly and helps operating systems and applications function efficiently. Devices with insufficient memory often experience slower performance and reduced functionality.
The same memory technology is also essential for powering AI servers operated by companies such as OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic.
As AI adoption accelerates globally, competition for memory supply has intensified across industries.
Tech Companies Warn Of Continued Price Hikes
Several technology firms have acknowledged the growing impact of rising memory costs.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook recently said increasing memory prices were affecting the company’s business. Although Apple maintains long-term supplier agreements, the company is still being forced to renegotiate contracts as supply tightens.
Apple has already raised prices for several products in India. Older iPhone models, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15, now cost Rs 5,000 more after the company withdrew demand generation support for retailers.
The newly launched iPhone 17e also debuted at a higher price point than its predecessor. Apple has additionally increased prices for newer MacBook models and adjusted storage options for the Mac mini.
Samsung has also raised prices across several smartphone ranges in India, including its Galaxy S26 flagship series and multiple A, F and M series devices.
Other smartphone brands, including Nothing, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Realme and Motorola, have implemented price increases ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 6,000 depending on the model.
Laptop And Gaming Console Prices Also Climb
Laptop manufacturers such as Dell and Asus have also increased prices for newly launched devices in India.
Analysts say the higher costs reflect tighter memory supply and rising component expenses linked to AI infrastructure expansion.
Internationally, Sony has already increased PlayStation 5 prices in several markets, while concerns are growing over potential price hikes for the Nintendo Switch 2.
According to International Data Corporation estimates, data centres are expected to consume around 70% of global memory chip production in 2026. The trend highlights how AI infrastructure spending is reshaping the electronics market and placing additional pressure on consumers.
