China Achieves Mass Production Of T1000 Carbon Fiber In Major Manufacturing Breakthrough

China has achieved a significant milestone in advanced materials manufacturing with the successful mass production of wet-process T1000-grade high-performance carbon fiber in Shanghai. The development was announced by Sinopec and is expected to strengthen China’s capabilities in several strategic industries, including aerospace, advanced manufacturing and emerging technology sectors.

The breakthrough was completed by Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology Co., Ltd.. The companies said the achievement will provide critical material support for future-focused industries such as embodied intelligence and the rapidly developing low-altitude economy.

Advanced Carbon Fiber Reaches Mass Production

The newly developed product is a 12K small-tow T1000-grade carbon fiber. In carbon fiber manufacturing, “12K” refers to a bundle containing 12,000 individual filaments.

According to Sinopec, each filament measures approximately seven micrometres in diameter, making it about one-tenth the thickness of a human hair. Despite its extremely small size, the material offers exceptional strength and durability, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.

The successful transition from research and development to large-scale manufacturing marks an important step for China’s domestic advanced materials industry.

    Strategic Importance For High-End Industries

Du Yongqian, manager of a carbon fiber plant at Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical, said the company has now established complementary capabilities in both small-tow and large-tow carbon fiber production.

He noted that the company currently has production capacity for nearly 20 different carbon fiber product models. These materials can serve a wide range of industries, including aerospace, high-end manufacturing, wind energy, transportation, sports equipment and leisure products.

The development is particularly significant because high-performance carbon fiber remains one of the most important materials used in modern engineering and industrial applications.

    Stronger Than Steel, Far Lighter

Carbon fiber combines exceptional strength with low weight. According to Sinopec, the material has a density of less than one-quarter that of steel while delivering strength that is seven to nine times greater.

In addition, carbon fiber offers excellent corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance and durability. These properties make it indispensable in industries where reducing weight while maintaining structural integrity is critical.

As a result, carbon fiber has become a foundational material for advanced manufacturing, aerospace systems, renewable energy equipment and strategic industrial projects.

    Growing Market Demand

China’s carbon fiber industry is expected to benefit from rising demand across multiple sectors. The growth of electric transportation, renewable energy infrastructure, aviation, robotics and advanced manufacturing is driving increased consumption of lightweight, high-strength materials.

Industry projections indicate that China’s carbon fiber market could exceed 60 billion yuan (approximately $8.9 billion) by 2030. The successful mass production of T1000-grade carbon fiber positions domestic manufacturers to capture a larger share of that growing market while reducing reliance on imported high-performance materials.

The achievement also highlights China’s broader efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains in critical technologies and advanced industrial materials.
