UK Investigates TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur Over Child Privacy Concerns

    UK Social Media Probe

Privacy Watchdog Probes Social Media Platforms

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur to assess how they protect children’s privacy. The probe focuses on how these platforms handle young users’ personal data and whether they comply with UK data protection laws.

Social media platforms use complex algorithms to prioritise content and keep users engaged. However, concerns have been raised that these systems can expose children to harmful material, leading to increased scrutiny of their privacy practices.

TikTok Under Review for Content Recommendations

The ICO is specifically examining how TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, processes the personal information of 13–17-year-olds to suggest content. The platform has already faced regulatory action in the UK. In 2023, the ICO fined TikTok £12.7 million ($16 million) for using children’s personal data without parental consent.

Meanwhile, Reddit and Imgur are being investigated over how they determine the age of child users. Platforms that fail to enforce proper age verification measures risk exposing children to inappropriate content.

Companies Respond to UK ICO’s Investigation

The ICO stated that if sufficient evidence of legal violations is found, the companies will be required to respond before a final decision is made.

A Reddit spokesperson told Reuters that the company has been working closely with the ICO and will comply with all UK regulations. The spokesperson also confirmed that Reddit plans to introduce new age assurance measures this year to align with UK laws.

ByteDance, TikTok, and Imgur have yet to respond to requests for comment.

    UK Tightens Online Safety Rules

The UK has implemented stricter social media regulations to protect children. Platforms are now required to:

    • Enforce age verification to prevent children from accessing harmful content.
    • Tame their algorithms to filter or downgrade inappropriate material.
    • Strengthen child data protection by complying with tougher privacy rules.

Last year, the UK introduced measures that require platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to limit children’s exposure to harmful material. This ongoing investigation could lead to further penalties or enforcement actions if violations are found.
