Xi Renews Push for High-Tech Hub Near Beijing

    Xi xiong’an hub development

Xi Jinping has renewed focus on the development of the Xiong’an New Area, a planned city located around 100 kilometres south-west of Beijing. Launched in 2017, the area was designed to ease pressure on the capital and emerge as a modern, high-tech urban centre. It is often compared to major Chinese cities like Shenzhen and Shanghai in terms of its long-term ambition.

    Focus on Innovation and Growth

During a recent visit, Xi called for Xiong’an to take the lead in driving innovation, particularly in technology and finance. He stressed the need to strengthen links between research and industry, and to speed up the commercial use of new technologies to support both emerging sectors and the upgrade of traditional industries, according to Xinhua News Agency.

    Shifting Functions from Beijing

A key part of the plan is the gradual relocation of non-capital functions away from Beijing. Xi urged faster movement of projects from state-owned enterprises, universities, and hospitals, while also encouraging financial institutions and research organisations to shift operations to Xiong’an. The goal is to reduce congestion in the capital while boosting development in the new zone.

    Ambition Meets Reality

Described by Xi as a project of “millennial significance”, Xiong’an is envisioned as a future-ready city filled with advanced industries, research centres, and modern infrastructure. However, progress has been uneven so far, with many institutions and residents slow to relocate since the project was first announced.

    Renewed Confidence in the Project

Despite these challenges, Xi reiterated that the decision to build Xiong’an is “entirely correct”, signalling continued strong political backing. His remarks underline China’s long-term commitment to turning the area into a leading hub for innovation and development.
