Nissan Highlights China As Innovation Hub At Auto Show

China has evolved beyond a simple sales destination and now serves as a centre for innovation and global exports, according to Nissan Motor’s global chief executive Ivan Espinosa. He made these remarks as the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, widely known as Auto China 2026, opened on Friday.

This year’s exhibition carries the theme “Future of Intelligence” and will continue until May 3. The event brings together major industry players and showcases advancements that reflect rapid technological change.

Strategic Importance Of The Chinese Market

Espinosa explained that China plays a vital role in Nissan’s global strategy for two key reasons. Firstly, the market’s sheer size makes it essential to the company’s overall performance. He noted that Nissan has stabilised its position in the country and has begun to see a recovery in sales.

Secondly, he highlighted China’s advanced technological ecosystem. He stated that the company intends to utilise innovations developed in China to strengthen its competitiveness worldwide. Consequently, China is not only a market for growth but also a source of cutting-edge developments that can be exported globally.

    Product Focus Driving Sales Recovery

Although Nissan faced several years of declining sales, the company has shifted its focus towards products tailored specifically for Chinese consumers. This approach has started to deliver measurable results. Espinosa pointed to the launch of the new N7 electric sedan as a significant milestone in this turnaround.

He emphasised that customer-centric design has been crucial. By combining its long-standing engineering expertise with local insights, Nissan has managed to reconnect with buyers. As a result, sales rose by 4.5 percent year on year in the second half of last year. Furthermore, the company recorded growth of around 7 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Nissan plans to continue introducing new models designed for the Chinese market. This strategy reinforces the brand’s relevance while also enabling the company to adapt quickly to evolving consumer preferences.

Openness To Partnerships And Future Growth

Espinosa also addressed questions about potential partnerships and investment opportunities. He confirmed that Nissan remains open to collaboration. However, he stressed that any agreement must protect the company’s brand, support shareholders, and ensure long-term sustainability.

Meanwhile, Auto China 2026 has attracted automakers, technology firms, and supply chain companies from 21 countries and regions. The exhibition spans both major venues in Beijing and covers a record 380,000 square metres, making it the largest automotive show in the world by area.

In total, 1,451 vehicles are on display, including 181 debut models and 71 concept cars, reflecting the scale and ambition of the global automotive industry.
