Microsoft Restores Access to 365 Services After Major Outage

Microsoft announced on Friday that it has restored access to its suite of productivity tools following a widespread outage that disrupted several key Microsoft 365 services. The company confirmed that systems were now “in a healthy state,” and user access had been fully restored.

    Outage Impact and Recovery

According to data from the outage tracking platform Downdetector.com, reports of service disruptions fell sharply to around 113 early on Friday morning, down from more than 15,800 at the peak a day earlier. The issue had affected a range of services including Outlook, Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview, causing disruptions for users across North America.

In an update posted on its status page on X, Microsoft 365 stated that “the affected infrastructure has been restored to a healthy state and the impact has been resolved.”

The company explained that engineers had earlier identified a section of its North American infrastructure that was failing to process traffic as expected. In response, Microsoft rerouted traffic through alternative systems to stabilise performance and begin recovery.

    User Disruption and Broader Context

The outage caused temporary difficulties for corporate and individual users reliant on Microsoft’s cloud-based services, with many reporting problems accessing email and security platforms. Microsoft did not disclose the root cause of the disruption but indicated that its investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The episode marks one of several high-profile cloud service interruptions in recent months, underscoring the challenges major technology providers face in maintaining the reliability of complex, interconnected systems.

Microsoft has emphasised that safeguards are now in place to prevent a recurrence of the issue and ensure continued stability across its cloud infrastructure.
