Strategic Vizhinjam Port Marks Milestone in Trade Infrastructure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on Friday, calling it a major step forward in India’s maritime development. Developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), the Vizhinjam Port is a key project under a public-private partnership with the government.

The port, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹8,900 crore, is expected to transform India’s shipping capabilities. Following a successful trial run, it received full commercial clearance in December last year.

At the launch event, attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, PM Modi described the port as a “symbol of new-age development.”

Economic and Strategic Importance for India and Kerala

In his address, PM Modi highlighted the port’s potential to enhance economic growth not only in Kerala but across the nation. He said the port would offer both stability and new opportunities for trade, making it a vital asset in India’s infrastructure growth.

“On one side lies a vast sea full of possibilities, and on the other, Kerala’s natural beauty. Between them stands this port, representing our vision of progress,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also underlined the port’s importance. It noted that Vizhinjam will improve India’s trade logistics, reduce reliance on foreign ports for cargo handling, and solidify the country’s role in international shipping.

India’s First Dedicated Container Transshipment Hub

Vizhinjam is India’s first dedicated container transshipment port. It has been designed with a natural depth of nearly 20 metres and is located close to one of the world’s busiest maritime routes. These features position it as a game-changer in the global cargo network.

According to the PMO, the port is part of the larger “Viksit Bharat” vision. It aims to modernise India’s transport and trade frameworks, making the country a global hub in logistics and maritime services.

With the launch of Vizhinjam port, India takes a firm step towards strengthening its international trade capabilities, enhancing self-reliance, and fostering regional development.
