Trump Administration Set to Announce Polysilicon Tariffs and Import Price Floors

The Trump administration is expected to announce new trade measures targeting polysilicon imports as soon as Thursday, introducing a 15% tariff alongside minimum import prices for a range of products linked to the solar and semiconductor industries, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The proposed action is intended to strengthen the position of domestic polysilicon producers amid growing concerns over China’s expanding influence in the global chip supply chain.

According to four sources, President Donald Trump’s proclamation is expected to establish minimum import prices for polysilicon, wafers, cells and modules, commonly known as solar panels. In addition, the administration is set to impose a 15% tariff on polysilicon derivatives.

New Measures Target Key Supply Chain Materials

Polysilicon is a critical raw material used in the production of both solar panels and semiconductors, making it strategically important for the renewable energy and technology sectors.

The planned measures combine tariffs with minimum import prices, creating a hybrid trade framework designed to support US manufacturers while limiting the impact of lower-priced imports. Reuters previously reported that the administration was considering this approach as part of its broader trade strategy.

    Focus on Domestic Manufacturing

The proposed policy reflects the administration’s effort to protect US polysilicon manufacturing facilities as competition intensifies within the global semiconductor supply chain.

Furthermore, the measures are expected to influence companies involved in the production of wafers, solar cells and finished solar modules. By establishing price floors, the administration aims to prevent imported products from undercutting domestic manufacturers through lower pricing.

Wider Implications for the Solar Industry

The announcement also follows the Commerce Department’s year-long national security investigation into polysilicon imports.

The outcome of that investigation carries significant implications for the expanding US solar manufacturing industry. At the same time, it comes as the Trump administration has rolled back several forms of federal support for renewable energy, placing greater emphasis on trade policy as a means of supporting domestic production.

Neither the US Commerce Department nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the expected announcement.
