Roblox Offers to Modify Features in Russia to Regain Access
U.S. gaming platform Roblox has expressed its willingness to modify certain features in Russia, as it seeks to overturn a government-imposed ban that came into effect earlier this month. The platform was blocked by Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, on 3 December over concerns about child safety.
Roblox Engages in Talks with Russian Watchdog
Roskomnadzor said on Wednesday that Roblox had contacted the agency and showed readiness to comply with Russian legal requirements. “If this isn’t just a statement, but a genuine willingness to change its approach to ensuring children’s safety online, then Roskomnadzor will interact with the platform as it does with any other service that complies with Russian law,” the watchdog was quoted as saying by Interfax.
A Roblox spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the company had reached out to Roskomnadzor and was open to implementing temporary restrictions. “Roblox is ready to temporarily limit communication features in Russia and revise our content moderation processes to meet legal requirements necessary to restore our community’s access,” the spokesperson said.
The company added that it intends to continue dialogue with Roskomnadzor once access is reinstated, including exploring additional compliance measures over time. However, Roblox declined to say when the ban might be lifted. Users in Moscow reported that attempts to access the site displayed a white screen and the message “checking updates.”
Balancing Compliance and Safety
Roblox has faced bans in several countries, including Iraq and Turkey, over concerns that predators could exploit the platform to target minors. The company maintains that it respects national laws and is committed to ensuring user safety through proactive monitoring and content moderation.
Roskomnadzor stated that Roblox had agreed to “remove destructive and dangerous information and prevent criminal activity and inappropriate communications on the platform.” The move could mark a rare compromise in the strained relationship between Russian authorities and U.S. technology firms.
Wider Context of Digital Restrictions in Russia
Russia’s crackdown on foreign digital platforms has intensified since the start of the war in Ukraine. Authorities have restricted or blocked several Western services, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Apple’s FaceTime, claiming the measures protect national interests against Western “information warfare” and moral decline.
Despite widespread bans, many Russians continue to access blocked platforms using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Young users often question the effectiveness of such restrictions, while others lament the lack of viable domestic alternatives.
Parents and educators in Russia have voiced concerns about Roblox’s exposure to inappropriate content and unsupervised interaction between children and adults. In response, Roblox reiterated its “deep commitment to user safety,” highlighting its “robust set of proactive and preventative safety measures” aimed at identifying and removing harmful content.
