Tesla to Double Robotaxi Fleet in Austin in December

Tesla to Double Robotaxi Fleet in Austin Next Month

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that the company will double the number of its robotaxis in Austin, Texas, in December. The move follows the rollout of Tesla’s self-driving service in the city earlier this year in June.

    Expansion of Tesla’s Robotaxi Operations

“The Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Austin should roughly double next month,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he also owns. However, the company has not disclosed how many robotaxis currently operate in Austin.

At present, Tesla runs its robotaxi service in two US cities — Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. Both regions still require safety monitors to be present inside the vehicles. Last week, Tesla also secured a permit to begin operating a ride-hailing service in Arizona, marking another step in its autonomous driving expansion.

    Broader Ambitions for Self-Driving Services

Musk has repeatedly expressed ambitious goals for Tesla’s robotaxi programme. In October, he stated that he expected Tesla’s robotaxis to operate without safety drivers across large parts of Austin before the end of the year. He also predicted that the service could expand to eight to ten metropolitan areas by year-end.

Back in July, Musk said Tesla aimed for its robotaxis to be accessible to about half of the US population before the close of the year. These projections underline Tesla’s push to make fully autonomous vehicles a widespread reality, despite regulatory and technical challenges.

    Industry Rebounds After Setbacks

After several years of delays, cost challenges and investigations, the robotaxi industry is now regaining momentum. Companies like Tesla, Alphabet’s Waymo, and Amazon’s Zoox are rapidly scaling up their operations. Their renewed growth reflects increasing confidence in the technology and a shift towards broader commercial deployment.
