Google Unveils Major Gmail Upgrades, Giving Users Big Choices Ahead
Google has announced two major updates to Gmail, marking one of the platform’s most significant overhauls in more than two decades. The changes will affect over two billion users worldwide, offering both new tools powered by artificial intelligence and greater flexibility with personal email addresses.
AI Features Now Free for All Gmail Users
The first change centres on the expansion of Gmail’s AI capabilities. Previously reserved for paid subscribers, tools such as AI Overviews, Help Me Write and Suggested Replies will now become available to all users at no cost.
Google described the upgrade as part of its plan to bring Gmail “into the Gemini era,” positioning the inbox as a proactive digital assistant rather than just a messaging service. Powered by Gemini 3, these features aim to help users better organise their emails, summarise messages and respond efficiently.
However, activating the new AI options requires users to allow Google’s Gemini to process their emails and related metadata. This level of access means sharing the content of inboxes with Google’s systems, prompting some to weigh the trade-off between convenience and privacy.
Importantly, Google has clarified that users will remain in control, with the ability to turn the AI features on or off at any time.
New Option to Change Primary Gmail Address
The second update, which caught many by surprise, allows users to change their primary Gmail address without creating a new account. This means that users can update their main email address while keeping their data, contacts and old messages intact.
The previous address will continue to work, ensuring that emails sent to the old account are still received. Google sees this as an opportunity for users to start fresh—whether they wish to drop an outdated email from school days or replace an address they no longer identify with.
That said, the option to change addresses is limited in both frequency and timeframe, so users will need to consider their choices carefully.
Balancing Innovation and Privacy
While these upgrades mark a major step forward for Gmail’s functionality, they also raise questions about data protection and account safety. Sharing inbox content with AI systems naturally increases privacy concerns, especially given the persistent threat of cyberattacks and phishing attempts targeting email users.
Ultimately, users will need to decide whether the benefits of smarter email management outweigh the risks of deeper data integration. Google maintains that user security remains a top priority, but each individual must choose the setup that best aligns with their comfort level.
