AI to Play a Key Role in Revamping National Education System

China has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its school curriculum, textbooks, and teaching methods across all education levels. The initiative, revealed in an official policy paper on Wednesday, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to transform its education system and boost technological innovation.

The policy targets students and teachers from primary through to higher education. The Ministry of Education said the adoption of AI in classrooms aims to cultivate fundamental skills among both groups, including independent thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration.

The use of AI, the ministry noted, will also foster more creative and challenging learning environments, helping shape what it calls the “core competitiveness of innovative talents.”

Driving Innovation and Growth Through Education in China

As the world’s second-largest economy, China is investing heavily in AI as a tool for long-term development. By embedding AI into the education system, the government hopes to create a new generation of innovators who can contribute to national growth and global competitiveness.

The push for AI in schools follows a broader national agenda. In January, the government released its first national action plan aimed at building a “strong-education nation” by 2035. The plan focuses on enhancing educational outcomes through innovation and technology.

This effort coincides with the rise of domestic AI startups. Earlier this year, Chinese startup DeepSeek gained global attention by launching a large language model that rivals US counterparts but is cheaper to develop. This prompted universities across the country to introduce AI courses and expand enrolment.

    Classroom Transformation Underway

The Ministry of Education believes that AI will not only modernise teaching tools but also redefine how learning is delivered. With AI’s integration, Chinese classrooms are expected to become more interactive, engaging, and tailored to individual student needs.

By embracing artificial intelligence across its education system, China is positioning itself to cultivate the skills needed for future industries and global innovation leadership.
