HFCL Expands Its Defence Capabilities With Advanced Radar Technologies

HFCL Limited is advancing its role in India’s defence sector through a focused push into radar technologies. The company aims to strengthen Information, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance capabilities for defence and security forces. This strategic shift highlights a clear commitment to innovation, while also reinforcing its position within the defence technology landscape.

Through its subsidiary, Raddef Private Limited, in which it holds a 90 percent stake, HFCL has developed a range of surveillance radars. These systems address varied operational requirements and reflect a strong emphasis on research-driven solutions. The radars use Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave technology, which delivers high accuracy, low power consumption, and improved resistance to interference. As a result, they offer reliable performance across demanding conditions.

Versatile Radar Solutions Across Multiple Applications

HFCL’s surveillance radars serve multiple purposes beyond traditional defence use. While they are highly effective for ground surveillance and border security, they also support applications such as weather monitoring and navigation systems. Their ability to measure both distance and velocity simultaneously enhances operational efficiency. Moreover, these systems remain portable and adaptable, allowing deployment in harsh and remote terrains.

In addition, HFCL is developing a drone detection radar designed to strengthen modern counter-drone systems. This initiative reflects the growing need to address emerging aerial threats. Alongside this, the company continues to expand its radar portfolio through ongoing research and development. Its work includes Doppler weather radars, threat emulators, LTE-based passive radars, and systems capable of penetrating fog and foliage. Coastal surveillance radars, avalanche detection systems, and altimeters further demonstrate the breadth of its technological capabilities.

    Market Growth And Strategic Positioning

The global surveillance radar market shows strong growth potential. It is expected to reach USD 12 billion annually by 2030, rising from the current USD 6.87 billion. This upward trend presents a significant opportunity for HFCL to expand its presence and influence within the sector.

Mahendra Nahata, Managing Director of HFCL, stated that the company is pursuing a transformative path focused on strengthening national security. He emphasised that the development of advanced radar systems reflects a commitment to equipping defence forces with modern tools. Furthermore, the investment in Raddef Private Limited supports domestic innovation and aligns with national priorities.

India accounts for 3.7 percent of global military spending, making it the third-largest spender worldwide. Consequently, this creates a favourable environment for indigenous defence technology providers. HFCL continues to align its efforts with national initiatives aimed at modernising military capabilities. Its emphasis on locally developed technologies reinforces its role in advancing the country’s defence infrastructure.
