Central Banks Monitor Emerging Risks From Mythos AI Model

Authorities in Australia and New Zealand have begun closely tracking the release of Anthropic’s advanced Mythos artificial intelligence model, as concerns grow over its potential cybersecurity implications. Both central banks confirmed on Wednesday that they are actively assessing the risks associated with the technology while coordinating with domestic and international regulators.

The model, which was designed primarily for defensive cybersecurity purposes, has nonetheless raised alarm due to its powerful capabilities. Early testing revealed that it could identify thousands of significant vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers. Consequently, experts now warn that such tools may disrupt traditional approaches to software security.

    Growing Concerns Over Cybersecurity Threats

Although Mythos AI aims to strengthen digital defences, its ability to detect weaknesses at scale has created a parallel concern. Specialists caution that the same capabilities could be misused to exploit vulnerabilities before organisations have time to address them. As a result, the balance between protection and risk has become a central issue for policymakers.

The Reserve Bank of Australia stated that it is engaging with peer regulators, government bodies, and regulated institutions to better understand the implications. Similarly, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand confirmed ongoing discussions with both domestic and Australian counterparts, describing the situation as a developing risk that requires close observation.

Meanwhile, global perspectives echo these concerns. Officials have characterised the technology as a double-edged sword, capable of enhancing cybersecurity systems while simultaneously exposing them to new forms of attack.

    Industry Access And Potential Impact

Anthropic has introduced the model through a restricted preview programme, granting access to selected major technology firms and additional organisations responsible for critical software infrastructure. This controlled rollout reflects the sensitivity surrounding the technology and its potential impact.

Furthermore, experts highlight that Mythos AI’s advanced coding and autonomous capabilities could accelerate the pace and sophistication of cyberattacks. This risk is particularly significant in sectors such as banking, where systems are often complex, interconnected, and built on legacy frameworks.

In addition, the model’s speed in identifying unknown vulnerabilities may outpace the ability of companies to respond effectively. Therefore, regulators and industry leaders are increasingly focused on ensuring that safeguards evolve alongside such rapidly advancing technologies.
