Indian Navy and ISRO Conduct Gaganyaan Recovery Trials

On Friday, December 6, 2024, the Indian Navy and ISRO carried out “Well Deck” recovery trials for the Gaganyaan mission. The trials were conducted off the coast of Visakhapatnam using a well-deck ship from the Eastern Naval Command. This operation marks a significant step in preparing for the safe recovery of the Gaganyaan crew module after its splashdown.

Understanding the Well Deck Recovery Method

A well deck in a ship is a compartment that can be flooded with water, allowing boats, landing crafts, or recovered spacecraft to dock inside. This capability makes it an ideal option for retrieving the Gaganyaan Crew Module. Following splashdown, the priority is to recover the module and its crew swiftly and with minimal discomfort.

During recovery, the crew module is towed into the ship’s well deck. Once inside, the crew can exit the module in a controlled and safe environment, ensuring their comfort and safety.

Key Steps in the Recovery Sequence

The trials used a simulated Crew Module Mock-up to replicate the size and weight of the actual module. The operation validated the recovery process, which involves several critical steps:

    1. Attachment of Recovery Buoy – The crew module is secured with a buoy for ease of handling.
    2. Towing to the Well Deck – The module is carefully brought to the ship’s well deck.
    3. Docking and Positioning – The module is positioned on a fixture within the well deck.
    4. Draining the Well Deck – Water is drained to stabilise the environment for the crew.

This exercise verified the sequence, fixtures, and equipment required for smooth recovery, helping refine the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

    Fine-Tuning Recovery Operations

These trials form part of a broader series aimed at perfecting the SOPs for both nominal and off-nominal conditions. The insights gained will ensure preparedness for recovering the crew module under diverse scenarios. By simulating real-world conditions, ISRO and the Navy are strengthening their collaboration to ensure the Gaganyaan mission’s success and the crew’s safety.
