Elon Musk Faces French Probe Over X And Grok Allegations

Tech billionaire Elon Musk is due to appear before French prosecutors for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into social media platform X and its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok. The case is expected to intensify tensions between the United States and Europe over issues related to Big Tech regulation and free speech.

It remains unclear whether Musk will attend the hearing, although participation is formally required. The session was scheduled earlier this year following a raid by Paris prosecutors on the French offices of X.

    Investigation Expands Beyond Initial Allegations

The probe initially focused on suspected fraudulent data extraction. However, authorities later widened the scope to include allegations of complicity in the distribution of child pornography and the creation of sexual deepfakes linked to Grok.

Prosecutors are examining whether X’s algorithms influenced how content was displayed and whether user data was improperly collected. The investigation follows complaints raised by French lawmakers and advocacy organisations.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Musk has previously denied any wrongdoing. He has described the investigation as politically motivated and criticised the actions taken by French authorities.

Rising Tensions Between France And The United States

The case has taken on a broader geopolitical dimension. Reports indicate that the United States Department of Justice has declined to cooperate with the French investigation, viewing it as politically driven.

However, French prosecutors have stated they are unaware of any such communication. They have also emphasised that the country’s legal system operates independently, underscoring the separation of powers enshrined in its constitution.

As a result, the investigation could further strain already sensitive relations between Washington and European regulators over the governance of major technology platforms.

Wider Scrutiny Of X And Its Leadership

Since Musk’s acquisition of X, the platform has faced increasing scrutiny from governments worldwide. Authorities have raised concerns about content moderation practices, data handling and compliance with local regulations.

In addition to Musk, several current and former executives have been summoned as witnesses. Among them is former chief executive Linda Yaccarino, along with other staff members connected to the platform’s operations.

Following the hearing, prosecutors will decide whether to close the case or continue the investigation. They may also move to place individuals under formal investigation, depending on the findings.

The outcome could have significant implications not only for X but also for how governments regulate artificial intelligence and digital platforms globally.
