China Establishes New Regulator to Boost Its Commercial Space Industry

China’s rapidly expanding commercial space sector received a major boost on Saturday with the creation of a dedicated regulatory body. The move highlights the central government’s determination to manage and support the fast-growing industry while ensuring sustainable and high-quality progress.

    New Commercial Space Department Announced

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced the formation of the Commercial Space Department, which will act as the main regulator for all commercial space activities in the country. This new body is expected to strengthen oversight, encourage innovation, and enhance coordination across China’s space ecosystem.

According to the CNSA, the department’s establishment marks a significant step in aligning commercial space activities with national priorities. It will also help promote efficiency, safety, and technological advancement throughout the entire supply chain — from rocket manufacturing to satellite services.

    Action Plan for Sustainable Development

The announcement follows the CNSA’s recent release of a detailed action plan for 2025–2027 aimed at supporting the safe and sustainable development of commercial space operations. The plan focuses on integrating private-sector innovation into China’s broader space development strategy.

Officials say the goal is to create a strong regulatory foundation that not only accelerates commercial growth but also maintains high safety and quality standards. The department will play a key role in implementing these policies and ensuring that private enterprises align with national space objectives.

    Rapid Growth Across the Industry

China’s commercial space industry has seen remarkable progress in recent years. Private companies are now developing rockets, building satellites, and offering various space-related services. This growth has been driven by supportive government policies, advances in technology, and increasing market demand.

Collaboration across the industrial chain has further accelerated innovation and efficiency. As a result, the number of commercial space enterprises in China has exceeded 600, according to data from the CNSA.

The creation of the Commercial Space Department is therefore seen as a crucial move to guide this expanding sector toward sustainable development and global competitiveness.
