    India’s Space Biotechnology Collaboration

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, recently oversaw a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This partnership aims to advance biotechnology applications in space, showcasing India’s commitment to cutting-edge research. With initiatives like the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and the Gaganyaan mission, Dr. Singh’s leadership is poised to significantly grow the national space sector.

Major Government Initiatives in Space and Biotechnology

Dr. Singh highlighted several key initiatives, recently approved by the Union Cabinet, which underscore India’s progress in space and biotechnology. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station is designed as a national platform for space research. Additionally, the new ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy’ aims to strengthen India’s biomanufacturing capabilities. By focusing on space biomanufacturing, this policy targets an ambitious bioeconomy value of USD 300 billion by 2030.

The Union Minister emphasized that the BioE3 initiative, along with new collaborations, will transform the biotechnology landscape. These initiatives promise advancements in human health research, innovative pharmaceuticals, and bio-based waste management, ultimately benefiting society.

Gaganyaan: A National Endeavor in Human Spaceflight

Dr. Singh discussed the Indian Human Space Programme, Gaganyaan, a national initiative led by ISRO. This program will offer a unique platform for research in microgravity, space biotechnology, and space biology. The recent MoU enables ISRO and DBT to combine expertise and make strides in Space Biotechnology, spanning fields from regenerative medicine to biotherapeutics. This collaboration also creates opportunities for startups in the space and biotech sectors.

The Minister also praised institutions like iBRIC-inStem in Bangalore and ICGEB in New Delhi for their contributions to space research, including joint research experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) through ISRO’s partnership with NASA.

ISRO’s Vision for a National Space Research Platform

Dr. S. Somanath, Secretary of the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman, discussed the Gaganyaan mission’s goals to expand India’s scientific capabilities. He announced plans for a dedicated Biotechnology Experiment and Technology Demonstration Rack on the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, which will enhance research opportunities in space biotechnology.

Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of DBT, highlighted the MoU’s historic significance. He described this collaboration as a gateway to India’s ‘Second Space Age,’ where biotechnology will support human sustainability in extreme environments, including outer space. The ISRO-DBT partnership will leverage India’s biotech expertise, advancing the country’s future space research goals.
