SpaceX Starship Rocket Explodes During Test in Texas

Static Fire Test Ends in Fiery Blast at SpaceX Starbase

A dramatic explosion rocked the SpaceX Starbase in Texas on Wednesday night during a routine engine test. The incident occurred around 11pm when the Starship 36 rocket was undergoing a static fire test—where engines are ignited while the rocket remains anchored to the launch pad.

Shocking video footage captured the moment the rocket’s nose burst open, briefly flooding screens with a white flash. The explosion sent thick, dark smoke billowing into the sky, and nearby residents reported shaking windows and rattling dishes.

    What Happened at Starbase?

Static fire tests are standard procedures before a launch, designed to verify engine performance while the rocket is held in place. Wednesday night’s test, however, turned catastrophic when the spacecraft suffered what officials described as “an anomaly”.

The City of Port Isabel informed residents that SpaceX experienced a “spacecraft anomaly during testing” and confirmed that emergency crews had been dispatched. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely, local news outlet KRGV reported.

    Growing Concerns Over Rocket Reliability

This is not the first time a SpaceX Starship has failed during testing. Just weeks ago, the massive 403-foot rocket exploded during its ninth demonstration flight. That incident was also described as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly”—a technical term SpaceX uses for explosive failures.

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, later reflected on the challenges. “I think I probably did spend a bit too much time on politics,” he admitted, noting that he has since shifted his focus back to core business activities. Musk explained that media coverage often exaggerates his political involvement and emphasised that he remains committed to his companies.

The Starship programme is central to Musk’s long-term space ambitions. However, recent setbacks highlight the technical challenges that remain before it can achieve a successful and consistent launch.
